Here are a few of my favourite links ... I've tried to sort them into categories. Click on one of the categories in the list below to see the links in that category. I've included my own little synopsis of the site as I know it. I hope you find some of these links as useful as I have. Please mail me with some of your favourite links and I'll endeavour to include them here.

LOCAL LINKS

These links relate to anything Irish, particularly to Dublin where I live.

ireland.com: The home site of The Irish Times. As well as the newspaper itself (which includes a 'Breaking News' section updated throughout the day) this site also includes a whole lot of other local and Irish-related information.

Irish Internet Weather Centre: Ya wanna know the weather forecast? Well here are all the forecasts you could wish for! Many of the sites linked from this page include worldwide forecasts.

WOW (What's on Where): Nationwide entertainment and events info for Ireland. Includes film, music (of every variety), TV, shopping, theatre, comedy, festivals, food, ... plenty to keep you amused!

Irish Abroad.com: Not an Irish site per sae but interesting and informative for Irish and those with an interest in Ireland. A very good site.

Online.ie: Formerly The Impromptu Guide, this is a brand new site. Pretty cheesy tabloidy homepage but comprehensive info, along the lines of WOW (see above).

Golden Pages: The Irish Telephone book on-line. Includes business and personal numbers and links to web-sites where available.

COMPUTER LINKS

These links are some of the sites I've found really useful while setting up this web site. I've learnt how to author a site from scratch from these sites.

HTMLGoodies.com: This is where it all started for me and my site! Its a great site for those just starting out. Joe Burns, the author has a really friendly, approachable style that eases the reader gently into HTML and Javascript. Thanks for the tip Cearbhall!

EarthWeb Discussions: The answer to all your web-authoring questions will be found here! I've only found this web site recently but I've already got some great tips and help from the participants of the forums.

Download.com: A huge range of programs, freeware, shareware and demos available to download - if you can't find it here you probably won't find it anywhere.

Here are a couple of links to organisations who's good work I support.

Greenpeace.org: The homepage of the environmental campaigning organisation committed to protecting our environment through non-violent means. Loads of information on all sorts of environmental issues. You can join Greenpeace from their site.

Amnesty International: The homepage of the Irish section of the human rights organisation committed to campaigning for human rights through non-violent means. Tons of information on their current campaign and human rights issues. You can join and/or contribute to Amnesty International from their site.

FOODIE LINKS

Some good recipe links.

USENET Cookbook: Some really scrummy recipes here. A bit haphazardly arranged but well worth taking a wander through this long list of interesting recipes.

ChefShop.com: A commercial site with a small selection of recipes and a really useful (though not terribly busy) cookery bulletin board.

TRAVEL LINKS

Travel links to whet your wander lust...

Lonely Planet: The Lonely Planet books were Col and my travel bible on our trip around the world. This site is a very good starting point for anyone considering traveling, especially those who like to get 'off the beaten track' (you won't find much on sun, sea and sand tourist-infested destinations here!)

Ryanair: For shorter hops from Ireland and the UK. Ryanair always have some very good value offers available (though if anyone hears of someone who manages to book one of these fares, please let us know! ;0) ) Seriously though, they are good value and give discounts for on-line bookings.

Air Tickets Direct: For cheap air fares. Includes flights to and from Ireland.

TNT Magazine: Col and I came across the hardcopy version of this magazine in Oz. It was a great source of current travel info for us to supplement our Lonely Planet. This is its on-line magazine.

Big Apple Greeter: OK, this is a location-specific link. Anyone traveling to New York I highly recommend Big Apple Greeters, a voluntary organisation that offers visitors to New York (individuals or small groups up to six people) a chance to meet a native New Yorker who will spend a few hours showing you around their home town. Col and I used this service in March of this year and our Greeter, Betty, was one of the highlight of our visit to NYC! (Hi Betty!)

Iarnrod Eireann: Information about rail travel in Ireland.

MISCELLANEOUS LINKS

Click here to return to the Categories List

This a whole bunch of links that don't really fall into any of the above categories but include some of my very favourite sites.

'Al Dente': This is a link to my friend Paul's band, Al Dente's, web site. I heard them for the first time recently and they have a terrific sound - a velvety 'Portishead' type of music (says she who wouldn't know her Portishead from her Pogues! They sound good, ok!) They've a couple of sample tracks to listen to on their site. Paul has asked me to clarify that this link has nothing whatsoever to do with cookery! :0)

Greg Fewer's Web Site: This is my cousin-in-law, Greg Fewer's site. Greg is Col's cousin and his site contains just about everything you ever wanted to know about Irish archeology but were afraid to ask (really!) He also has a few links to other Fewer family web sites on his page.

Dilbert: Dilbert! Anyone who works in an office, especially an engineering office, will relate to Dilbert and his friends.

MapQuest: Maps, maps and more maps! Bet you'll even be able to find a map of your street here.

BBC Radio 4: My favourite radio station (it is, so there!)

Amazon.co.uk: Terrifically handy on-line bookshop. Very good discounts available on many titles too. And a good place to check if you've being having difficulty finding a title in your highstreet bookshop.

The Craggy Island Examiner: A must-read for all Ted-heads! Arsebiscuits!
